Time of happiness

My favorite time of happiness is when I went on a service trip to Lampung with a medical team. Once a year, there is a medical team that comes from Korea to Indonesia to give free medical services. This team consists of amazing people who sacrifice their leisure for a voluntary work. Moreover, they travel to Indonesia o their own expense .They even bring with them medicines and presents for Indonesians, which are bought with their own money as well. Every year, my family and I join with these amazing people to go on a meaningful service trip.
As usual, the plane from Korea landed at about 10:00 p.m. in Jakarta. I went to the airport with several missionaries to pick the team up. Because it was too late for us to star on our trip, we decided to stay one night at a hotel nearby. We agree to leave to Lampung the next morning.
On the next day, we started on our journey early in the morning. We rode a bus for 3 to 4 hours until we reached the Jakarta harbor. From there, my favorite part of the trip began. We got on a ship that was heading to Bakauheni Lampung. The bus we were riding entered this humongous ship. I was stunned to find trucks, cars and motorcycles all parked on the ship. Because no passengers are allowed to stay in the vehicle, we got out of the bus and looked for a place to rest. We chose to pay for a business room which has the best kinds of chairs and air conditioner. A regular room and an economic room were avoided because we need good rest.
After hours of traveling by the sea, we finally arrived at Bakauheni Lampung, the harbor of Lampung. We got on our bus, which was parked in the ship, and went to a hotel. It took about 2 hours to get to the hotel which is located in the capital city called Bandar Lampung. By the time we were at the hotel, our hungry stomachs signaled our dinner time. Excited to enjoy some good food, I rushed to my room, threw my bags and returned to the lobby. When everyone was back on the bus, we drove off to a restaurant.
After dinner, the whole service trip members had a meeting. We first took time to pray and worship. Then, we spent some time to introduce ourselves so that we would get to know each other. Later, when everyone had gone their turns, we talked about what we would do the next day at the village.
Early morning at 7:00 a.m., we were all headed t our first church to serve. The churches we go in Lampung are ran by one of my father’s disciple’s church. Most of the churches we went to took about more than 3 hours from the hotel, because they are located in very country side of Lampung. We slept in the bus not knowing when we were going to arrive.
Suddenly, when you look out of the window and see some village people all going somewhere in a hurry, that means we are close to the church. When we arrive at the church, there are already more than 100 people, kids, adults and old people who have waited us for hours.
As soon as we arrive, we are off to do our job. Some will be carrying boxes out from the bus, setting up the tables, start handing out orders and more. When we are all set up and ready to start this ministry, we gather up and pray. After praying, we are all headed to do our own jobs.
My job was to guide the patients one by one to the right faculty, such as pediatrics, orthopedics, obstetrics, dentist, internal treatment, and the surgical department. At first, I was worried about messing up and leading the patients to the wrong medical department. But after doing it for more than an hour or so, I was an expert at it. I memorized all the different medical terms in Korean and Indonesian. I felt very accomplished.
Since I hope to become a doctor one day, my father let me look around the whole church, during the service. I saw some doctors that took good care of kids, others who were experts with bones, and
surgeons who are my favorite. The surgery doctor was working to cut off a tumor that was located on the back of a patient’s neck. I could not take my eyes off of that surgery. Because it is my dream to become a surgeon one day. After watching two doctors working on it for hours, the head doctor turned over to me and said, “You can assist me with the next patient.” When I heard that I thought I was going to burst with happiness! I had the chance to experience my dream even before college!
When the next patient was lying down on the surgery bed, the head doctor told me to put on my gloves. I was so nervous that my hands were
sweaty. The head doctor was patiently waited for me with a generous smile. The first thing the head doctor did was to open up the tumor that was located on the left ear of the patient. When I was ready, he showed me what I was supposed to do. Having watched the previous operations, I understood my task. The head doctor complimented me on my good memory. I was very happy, but at the same time still very nervous. After the surgery, I felt like flying. All the doctors were complimenting me on my good assistance and my parents were very proud of me. Of course, I was very proud of myself, too.
When the last patient left the church in happiness, everyone was very exhausted. It looked like everyone was going to fall asleep in just a few seconds. But I was still too excited to be exhausted. So, I started to pack, and everyone else helped. We went to pizza hut afterwards and had the most delicious dinner ever. After filling our stomachs, we went back to our hotel.
I think, all these amazing moments will never leave my mind. I wish I could take my memories out of my mind and save it in a video camera, so I can watch it over and over again whenever I want to. Every second of the service trip is so special to me that I do not want to lose it. All these memories are my times of happiness.
